Meeting employees' requests about flexible work options may help attract and retain people who have competing demands on their time.  Surveys now show that many older and younger workers value flexible working conditions.  Being prepared for this requirement may provide a competitive edge for your business.  It is important to note, however, that workforce flexibility works best when people know what is expected of them and how you see them performing.  This is covered later in Setting Goals and Giving Feedback.

Options for flexible work include:

  • Job sharing
  • Fewer hours per day or week
  • Fewer days per week
  • Time off without pay
  • reduced pay is spread evenly over the year
  • Providing the option for a different position in the organisation
  • Working school terms only
  • Working from home
  • Taking on a training role to make use of older worker's experience
  • Special project work
  • Other individual options may be negotiated in order to keep staff who are well performing
