Over the past thirty (or so) years recruiting new staff has been relatively easy in Australia.
A large number of new young employees have become available each year and, by and large, employers have been able to pick and choose their staff.
Starting
in the next few years (in the case of skilled employees it has
already started) there will be far fewer young people entering the
workforce than in the 'baby boomers' time. As the baby boomers
retire it is likely to become more difficult to
recruit the good staff.
Employers who can attract and retain workers over 45 may stabilise
their workforce because older employees tend to stay longer.
Arranging work around existing employees or training employees may
be a lot easier than finding a new employee.
